Amaravati/Hyderabad, Apr 7 (PTI) YSRCP leaders and activists staged a protest in Hyderabad on Tuesday, expressing concern over an article published by a media house, alleging that it contained derogatory remarks against their party.
YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy condemned the remarks made by a journalist, alleging that they were “derogatory and demeaning” towards women.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu condemned the YSRCP protest, calling it an “attack on press freedom”.
Expressing dissent, the YSRCP leaders gathered near the media house and raised slogans, stating that the content was “inappropriate” and not in line with responsible media practices.
“The YSRCP is protesting in Hyderabad, expressing concern over certain writings against the party, the content was inappropriate and not in line with responsible media practices,” a party leader told reporters.
The content is objectionable and reflects poorly on ethical journalism, said Jagan, adding that such content misleads the public and must be condemned.
The opposition leader emphasised the need for maintaining decorum and accountability in journalism.
The YSRCP leaders insisted that media organisations should adhere to ethical standards and avoid publishing content that could create unrest.
Expressing objection, the former CM said dragging women into political discourse through such language was not criticism but a “disgraceful attack” that undermines public debate.
“Such statements are repulsive and amount to insulting women while distorting public discourse,” said Jagan in a post on X.
Alleging that the remarks were a “diversionary tactic”, he accused political rivals and aligned media of “resorting to misinformation and propaganda”.
Jagan said party leaders and cadre held peaceful protests demanding strict action and an unconditional apology.
He asserted that despite the alleged provocation, the cadre exercised restraint and upheld democratic values without resorting to violence.
The YSRCP chief also criticised leaders including Naidu, IT Minister Nara Lokesh and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, accusing them of backing the remarks.
He alleged that such support reflects a “misogynistic attitude” and demanded immediate action against the journalist.
In an official release, CM Naidu said, “Such actions by YSRCP leaders amount to an assault on press freedom and expose a pattern of intimidation against media organisations.” He alleged that the participation of MLAs and former ministers in such protests reflects a “toxic political culture”.
Naidu said attempts to intimidate the media through protests and threats would no longer be tolerated.
