Kolkata, Mar 30 (PTI) A total of 78 nominations were filed on Monday across 152 assembly constituencies going to polls in the first phase of the West Bengal elections, according to official data.
Purba Medinipur was among the districts that saw a higher number of filings, with three candidates each submitting their nomination papers in Nandakumar, Mahisadal and Nandigram seats.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP filed his nomination papers in Nandigram.
In northern Bengal, constituencies such as Mekliganj, Mathabhanga and Cooch Behar Uttar reported two nominations each, while several seats in Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling districts recorded no filings on the first day.
A number of constituencies across Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum, Bankura and Paschim Bardhaman districts also reported zero nominations during the day.
Polling will be held for the state’s 294-member assembly in two phases, on April 23 and April 29, with counting of votes scheduled on May 4.
April 6 is the last date for filing nomination papers in the first phase. The scrutiny of papers will be taken up on April 7, while April 9 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature. PTI SCH SOM
