New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov on Wednesday held a meeting with India’s envoy to the country, Abhay Kumar, with the West Asia situation figuring in the discussion.
“During the meeting, concern was also expressed over the current tensions in the Middle East,” according to a statement issued by the Azerbaijan foreign office.
On behalf of India, the ambassador expressed “deep gratitude to the Azerbaijani side for the support provided during the evacuation of Indian citizens from Iran”, it said.
Amid the escalating West Asia conflict, stretching over a month, several Indian nationals have crossed over from Iran into the Azerbaijan side via land border crossing in the past few weeks.
Kumar, a 2003-batch IFS officer, was in December 2025 appointed as India’s envoy to Azerbaijan.
“On April 1, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov received the newly appointed ambassador of India to our country Abhay Kumar,” the statement said.
During the meeting in Azerbaijan, the current state and development prospects of the existing relations between the two nations were discussed.
“The parties noted that the mechanism of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs would be useful in terms of discussing issues of cooperation as well as issues of disagreement between the two countries,” the Azerbaijan foreign office said.
It was noted during the meeting that the historical relations between the countries formed the “foundation of relations”.
The foreign office said satisfaction was expressed with the existence of direct flights, and development of cooperation in the fields of tourism and education.
Touching upon cooperation in the energy sector, it was noted that the Indian company ONGC Videsh’s stake in Azerbaijan’s Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) field block and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline is one of the important directions of bilateral economic relations, it said.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov congratulated the ambassador on his new appointment and wished him success in his diplomatic activities.
Ambassador Kumar expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and emphasised his intention to contribute to the expansion of Azerbaijani-Indian relations in all directions during his tenure, it said. PTI KND NB
