Ghaziabad, Apr 13 (PTI) Tensions prevailed after a man, who escaped police custody, died following a crash in Modinagar as villagers demanded strict action against police personnel for their alleged negligence in the sequence of events, officials said on Monday.

Amit Chowdhry, 35, an outsourced employee of Patla Nagar Panchayat, died on Sunday evening, following which tension prevailed in the area. A large number of villagers gathered at a Ghaziabad hospital, demanding the arrest and dismissal of the accused police personnel on murder charges.

Considering the sensitivity of the situation, heavy police deployment has been made in and around Patla town, officials said.

Modinagar Assistant Commissioner of Police Bhaskar Verma said Chowdhry was found in an injured and intoxicated condition on the Patla-Dhaulri road on the night of April 7. Police personnel took him to the Muradnagar Community Health Centre for treatment, but he allegedly fled from there.

During the escape, he was hit by a truck, following which his condition remained critical, the officer said.

Meanwhile, action has been initiated against police personnel in connection with the case. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari earlier ordered the suspension of Patla police outpost in-charge Sub-Inspector Lokendra, Sub-Inspector Shaid Khan, Head Constable Sachin Mohan and Constable Narendra.

Officials said the role of Niwari Station House Officer K K Maurya is also under scrutiny and a departmental inquiry has been initiated.

Police said the matter is being thoroughly investigated and further action will be taken based on the findings. PTI COR KIS SHS SHS
