UP: Hospital worker arrested for raping mentally ill patient in Saifai

Etawah (UP), Mar 19 (PTI) A sanitation worker at the Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences, Saifai, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a 38-year-old mentally ill patient.

The incident came to light after a medical examination on Tuesday revealed the woman, who is unable to communicate, was pregnant.

Saifai Police Station House Officer (SHO) Bhupendra Singh Rathi said the matter was reported through a complaint lodged by Dr Arun Kumar Mishra, Head of the Psychiatry Department.

The woman has been undergoing treatment in the department since June 14, 2025, and is mentally unfit to speak or communicate, the SHO said.

The pregnancy prompted an internal hospital probe due to the gravity of the situation. The accused, identified as Ravindra, a resident of Lakhna town, who was employed at the department as a contractual staff.

Police have registered a case has been registered under section 64(2) (Rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused has confessed to the crime during interrogation and has been taken into custody, the SHO added. PTI COR ABN SMV AKY
