Gonda (UP), Apr 1 (PTI) A Government Railway Police constable lost both his legs after being hit by a moving train as he chased a fleeing suspect at the Gonda Junction railway station, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred around midnight on Tuesday at platform number one when Akash Singh (29), a 2018-batch recruit and a native of Mau district, had taken Sunil Kumar (35) into custody on charges of assault and alleged theft, Government Railway Police (GRP) SHO Dinesh Kumar Pandey said.
While being taken for questioning, the accused managed to break free and attempted to board the Dibrugarh-Chandigarh Express, which was arriving at the platform, he said.
Singh ran after him and pulled him down from the train, but slipped under it as he fell into the gap between the train and the platform, Pandey said.
Singh sustained severe injuries, leading to the amputation of both his legs, he added.
The injured constable was initially rushed to a railway hospital, then referred to a medical college and later shifted to the Lucknow Trauma Centre, where he remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
The accused, who also sustained injuries during the incident, has been apprehended and is receiving treatment at a medical college. A case has been registered against the suspect under charges of assault, theft and escaping from custody, police said.
GRP SP Laxmi Niwas Mishra has appealed to officers and personnel of the Gorakhpur zone to contribute one day’s salary towards the treatment and support of the injured constable. PTI COR KIS SMV PRK
