New Delhi: An Uttar Pradesh Court has acquitted three of the four men accused of the gangrape and murder of a 20-year-old girl in Hathras district in September 2020.

The district’s SC/ST court has held one guilty of the crime. The sentence is yet to be announced.

The Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped and murdered by the four upper-caste men on 14 September, 2020 in Boolgarhi, Hathras according to the victim’s statement to a magistrate.

She died two weeks later in a Delhi hospital.

The court held accused Sandeep, 20, guilty and acquitted the other three – Ravi, 35, Luv Kush, 23, and Ramu, 26.

The crime had triggered a huge outcry that year, and much anger was directed at the political establishment after the police apparently took the girl’s body from the hospital without the family’s permission and forcibly cremated her in the dead of night.
