Union Government standardises breath analysers for accuracy

New Delhi: The Legal Metrology Division of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, has introduced draft rules for Evidential Breath Analysers under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, a PIB press release stated.

To ensure the accuracy and reliability of breath analysers used in law enforcement and workplaces, the government has drafted rules for their standardisation. The draft rules for Evidential breath analysers stipulate that they must be verified and stamped within one year. This will ensure that in case of a failure, the concerned authorities can take cognisance of the situation and initiate necessary steps. It is also necessary to ensure that the breathalyser is standardised in order to avoid any wrongful penalties. This can be achieved by conducting standardised tests on different devices.
