New Delhi: The government has decided to crack down on deep fakes by putting pressure on intermediaries to ensure that they don’t allow the spread of misinformation and patently false information on the internet, a PIB press release stated.
According to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the intermediaries companies providing online services — will be responsible for not hosting, sharing, uploading, transmitting, or distributing any prohibited information.
Deep fakes are a type of misinformation that can be created using artificial intelligence. Under the IT Rules, 2021, the Grievance Officer of the concerned intermediary will be required to act expeditiously upon receiving a request from a user or victim. The officer will have the power to order the takedown of the content if it is not in compliance with the rules.
The government has established Grievance Appellate Committees to allow users and victims to appeal online against decisions taken by the Grievance Officers of intermediaries. These decisions can be passed online on the website www.GAC.gov.in. The government is committed to protecting the citizens from all forms of misinformation and patently false information.
