Aizawl, Mar 17 (PTI) Mizoram Governor Vijay Kumar Singh on Tuesday underscored the need for understanding “local dynamics” before arriving at policy decisions, during an interaction with a high-level research team at Lok Bhavan here, officials said.
Interacting with the 12-member multi-disciplinary team from the Centre for Contemporary China Studies (CCCS), Singh said that policy decisions must be rooted in ground-level perspectives to avoid potential errors in judgement.
The CCCS team, a Ministry of External Affairs think tank led by Joint Secretary Aparna Ray, is currently on a 10-day tour of the northeast.
The team arrived in Aizawl on Monday for a two-day visit.
The visit aims to orient the team on ground realities along the India-Myanmar border, and to understand the perspectives of local civil and security administrations, the officials said. Mizoram shares a 510-km border with Myanmar.
During the meeting, Singh described Mizoram as a “well-organised society” and one of the country’s most peaceful states, characterised by strong political stability and a lack of major inter-tribal rivalries.
Despite a revenue deficit in its agriculture-heavy economy, the governor told the visiting analysts that the state is “progressing steadily” with a focus on aggressive infrastructure growth.
Singh said the recent extension of railway line up to Sairang has brought Aizawl under the country’s railway map for the first time in history.
He also detailed ongoing plans to extend railway lines to southern Mizoram, connecting with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project.
This initiative, along with the Central government’s vibrant villages programme for border infrastructure, is expected to significantly transform the northeast, the governor said.
The CCCS team shared their preliminary observations about the region with the governor. PTI CORR RBT
