United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres Wednesday announced the appointment of Kamal Kishore of India as Assistant Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

He will succeed Mami Mizutori of Japan, who will continue to serve in the role until Kishore takes over.

Kishore has nearly three decades of experience in disaster risk reduction, climate action, and sustainable development at various levels. He has held important positions in the government, UN, and civil society organizations.

Kishore’s experience in disaster risk reduction includes being the Head of the Department of the National Disaster Management Authority, which he has been responsible for since 2015.

As part of the G20, Kishore has led the G20 Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction, and also contributed to the creation of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, which was launched by the Prime Minister of India during the Climate Action Summit in 2019.

The United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction Office (UNDRR) is the UN agency mandated to lead and coordinate disaster risk reduction efforts. The UNDRR Director, Paola Albrito, has been appointed by the Secretary-General to continue in the role of Special Representative until Kishore takes over.
