Palghar, Mar 13 (PTI) A 25-year-old tribal man was allegedly abducted, hung upside down from a tree and tortured by a brick kiln owner in Maharashtra’s Thane district, police said on Friday.

The police have registered a case against the accused, Nandu Deolikar, and his associate, both residents of Bhiwandi, in connection with the assault that occurred on Wednesday, an official said.

According to the police, the duo attacked the victim, Subhash Shinwar Bhoir, after they were unable to track down his older brother, who had allegedly borrowed Rs 50,000 from the kiln owner.

“As per the complaint, the accused forcibly bundled the victim into a four-wheeler on the pretext of searching for his brother on Wednesday afternoon. When they could not find the brother at local kilns, they drove Bhoir to their own kiln unit at Paye in Bhiwandi,” the officer said.

The duo allegedly attacked the victim with sharp weapons, tied his hands and feet with ropes and hung him upside down from a tree, before proceeding to rub chilli powder into his wounds even as he screamed for help, the official said, quoting the FIR.

Bhoir was held captive overnight, but managed to escape, eventually reaching Nagave, he said.

A first information reported has been registered under sections 140(3) (kidnapping with intent to secretly confine), 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 127(2) (wrongful confinement for extortion), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the accused, who have not been arrested, the official said.
