Nagpur, Mar 29 (PTI) A train from Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh to Itwari in Maharashtra derailed near Nagpur on Sunday, officials said.
Nobody was injured in the incident that occurred around 9.45 pm between Kalamna and Kamptee under the South East Central Railway’s Nagpur Division, they said.
According to officials, the front two wheels of the first coach of the Balaghat-Itwari MEMU (68715) slipped off the track.
“The train was running at a controlled speed, which played a key role in avoiding any serious damage or loss of life,” said a railway official.
Passengers on board remained safe, and railway traffic was not badly affected, he said.
Another official said, “Initial reports suggest some obstruction near the track, possibly sleepers placed too close, may have caused the derailment. A detailed inquiry has been ordered.” Witnesses reported hearing a loud crash just before the derailment. It was also found that one wheel of a coach was damaged due to the impact.
Repair and restoration work has begun at the site, and officials said normal services will continue uninterrupted. PTI COR NR
