Thane, Mar 24 (PTI) The civic transport undertaking in Maharashtra’s Thane city has tabled a Rs 791.86 crore budget for 2026-27, proposing a shift towards electric buses with no fare hikes for passengers.
Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) manager Balchandra Behere presented the budget on Monday, outlining a vision to transform the undertaking into a sustainable, tech-driven multimodal transport system.
Under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, 100 air-conditioned electric buses are expected to be inducted into the TMT fleet in 2026-27, and tendering processing is underway for 160 additional AC e-buses through the 15th Finance Commission’s NCAP grants.
By March 2027, the TMT aims to have 370 new vehicles, including 270 AC e-buses and 100 CNG non-AC buses.
The undertaking expects a total revenue of Rs 182.27 crore from bus operations and advertisements, and has requested a grant of Rs 538.29 crore from the Thane civic body to bridge the deficit caused by rising fuel costs and subsidised travel for senior citizens and women.
The budget also provides for the retrofitting of 240 diesel buses with CNG kits and the implementation of digital passes for senior citizens to streamline operations. PTI COR ARU
