New Delhi, Mar 12 (PTI) Delhi is expected to witness a significant rise in electricity demand this summer and is likely to cross 9,000 MW, officials said on Thursday.

According to the State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC) figures, last year, Delhi’s power demand peaked at 8,442 MW.

Power minister Ashish Sood said that the Delhi government is preparing the infra accordingly, as the demand is expected to reach 9,000 MW.

“For the last 10 years, the power infrastructure in Delhi has not been properly upgraded. Because of that neglect, the growing electricity demand is now putting pressure on the existing system in some areas,” Sood said in a statement.

The government is now working to fix this problem in a systematic way, he said and added that every assembly constituency has been mapped and new transformers, circuit breakers, and other asset augmentation are being planned.

A clear 1-year and 3-year roadmap (up to 2029) has been prepared to upgrade Delhi’s power infrastructure, the minister said.

“While previous governments did not take serious steps to strengthen the system, our government is actively working to make Delhi’s power infrastructure modern and future-ready,” he added.

A BSES spokesperson said that peak power demand in BRPL discom areas of South and West Delhi, which clocked 3,798 MW demand last summer, is expected to reach around 3,997 MW this summer.

On the other hand, in the BYPL discom area of East and Central Delhi, power demand, which peaked at 1,824 MW last summer, is expected to touch around 1,991 MW this year.

Delhi’s peak power demand breached the 7,000 MW mark for the first time – reaching 7,016 MW – in 2018.

The expected demand of over 9,000 MW represents an increase of over 300 per cent over the peak power demand of 2,879 MW in 2002.

Based on current demand growth trends, Delhi’s peak power demand is likely to cross the 10,000 MW mark by around 2028-2029, depending on weather conditions and demand growth, officials said.

A Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) statement said that the discom expected a peak summer demand of 2,622 MW this season in its distribution area of North Delhi.

“The company successfully met the peak power demand of 2410 MW in 2025,” it said.

Comprehensive measures have been ensured for uninterrupted power supply during the peak demand season, it said.

Adequate arrangements have been put in place through bilateral agreements, reserve shutdown mechanisms, and participation in power exchanges to maintain supply reliability, it added. PTI VIT VN VN
