Startups create over 15 lakh jobs in India

The Startup India initiative launched in 2016 continues to drive innovation and employment.

New Delhi: Over 15 lakh direct jobs have been created by the recognized startups in the country, a PIB press release stated.

The government launched the Startup India initiative in January 2016 to promote innovation, encourage investments, and create start-ups. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) of India has been given the responsibility of recognizing the startup organizations under the Startup India initiative.

As of June 30, 2024, 1,40,803 entities have been recognized as startups by DPIIT. The number of direct jobs created by DPIIT-recognised startups in various years is as follows: 306 in 2016, 51,980 in 2017, 1,00,646 in 2018, 1,63,463 in 2019, 1,81,404 in 2020, 2,10,545 in 2021, 2,74,685 in 2022, 3,91,943 in 2023, and 1,78,316 in 2024.
