New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) BJP MP Dorjee Tshering Lepcha commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday for transforming India into a global power that earns respect worldwide and congratulated him for becoming the longest-serving head of government, surpassing the previous record held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling.
Raising the matter in a zero-hour mention in the Rajya Sabha, Lepcha said he wanted to highlight a “defining moment” in India’s political history, as the name of Modi has been etched in the annals of the country’s history, as he surpassed the record once held by Pawan Chamling, who served for 8,930 days as chief minister of Sikkim.
“Prime Minister Modi has become the longest serving head of any government by serving 8,931 days in public office, first as the chief minister of Gujarat and now as the Prime Minister of India,” the BJP MP from Sikkim said.
“PM Modi has given unparalleled leadership and dedication to the country,” he said, adding that from his transformative years in Gujarat to the remarkable strides made in the Centre, the prime minister has reset India’s social and economic fabric, guiding it through challenges and turning them into opportunities.
“Under his leadership, he has transformed the Northeast into a symbol of progress, empowerment and hope. New highways connectivity, robust digital and energy infrastructure are the threads that bind us to the larger fabric of this nation, and that is the difference between a long tenure that merely occupies office and that which transforms the lives of crores of people,” the MP said.
Lepcha said after a decade of being the chief minister of Gujarat, he transformed the state into one of India’s most attractive destinations.
“Since 2014, we have witnessed a shift in our national character. Today, India is emerging as a global power, a nation that commands respect, a country that defines its own future.
“PM Modi ji’s long tenure stands as an example of continuity with transformation, continuity that delivers and continuity that raises people’s aspirations. At the core of PM Modiji’s character lies deep empathy for the poor and the marginalised,” he added.
He said the prime minister truly believes in the philosophy of ‘Antyodaya’ – uplifting the last person in the queue.
Under PM Modi’s leadership, the Rajya Sabha MP from Sikkim claimed that women-led development has gained momentum by abolishing instant triple talaq, guaranteeing one-third reservation in the legislature, and empowering women through Lakhpati Didi and Namo Drone Didi Schemes.
He created new ministries like AYUSH, Jal Shakti, Cooperation, and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to address specific challenges with focused energy.
Modi introduced the ‘Whole of Government’ approach, breaking silos and ensuring seamless coordination, the BJP MP said, amid objections from several Opposition MPs.
The Opposition members raised their voices, alleging that he has been allowed to continue past his allotted time.
