New Delhi: A case of mistaken identity led to the murder of a patient in Delhi’s Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital Sunday afternoon, the police have said.

According to the police, the shooters, members of the Hashim Baba gang, were on the lookout for a rival but ended up shooting dead 32-year-old Riyazuddin who was admitted to the same ward and was being treated for gunshot injuries on the opposite bed.

Two arrests have been made so far in the case of those accused of aiding the shooters and being part of the conspiracy. The shooter, an 18-year-old, and his associates are yet to be arrested.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Choudhary said the person who was the killer’s target had an ongoing rivalry with the Hashim Baba gang.

After scouring CCTV footage, Instagram feeds, and call detail records, a raid was conducted in Uttar Pradesh’s Loni district which led to the arrest of 20-year-old suspect Faiz.

According to the police, he spilled the beans during interrogation that one Faheem, alias Badshah Khan, was the mastermind behind the killing.

The police said Faiz and his brothers, Moin Khan and Faujaan, worked for the Hashim Baba gang. Another suspect Farhaan was also raided and subsequently arrested.

The DCP added that Faheem would frequently call both accused to his flat at Babarpur in Delhi. On the day of the incident, all of them were in the flat when Faheem instructed them to kill a person who was admitted to ward 24 in GTB Hospital.

“Both of them also said that Faheem instructed them on how to flee from the hospital after committing the crime. Faiz provided the bike to the accused to reach the hospital. After the shooting, Moin Khan and Faiz came to their home in Loni. Further investigation is on,” the DCP said.

Meanwhile, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj wrote on microblogging site X Monday that a meeting was held with the Federation of All India Medical Association to discuss the incident. Bhardwaj said a decision had been made to install metal detectors at all emergency entries of state-run hospitals in Delhi, and two armed guards would patrol these gates.

He also said standard operating procedures (SOPs) of hospitals would be reviewed along with the installation and maintenance of CCTV cameras. The minister said the police commissioner had been requested to assign one constable for round-the-clock duty at hospitals.
