Schoolgirls pregnant: Cong MLAs walk out of Chhattisgarh assembly, call minister ‘insensitive’

Raipur, Mar 16 (PTI) The opposition Congress on Monday alleged three minor girls studying and residing at a porta cabin high school hostel in Gangaloor in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district were found pregnant and demanded a discussion on the issue in the assembly.

State Education Minister Gajendra Yadav said two of the students were not staying at the porta cabin hostel, while the third had stopped residing at the facility after going home during Diwali vacations.

The response, however, did not satisfy the Congress legislators, who walked out of the House.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress’ Bijapur MLA Vikram Mandavi, Leader of Opposition Charan Das Mahant, former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel and other legislators alleged that the BJP government in the state was trying to suppress the incident.

The Congress MLAs alleged the three students were sent back to their homes as soon as news about the pregnancies surfaced, and then authorities claimed they were absent from the hostel.

The incident, in a Scheduled Area, was extremely serious, the Congress legislators said while raising questions about the safety of girls in government-run hostels.

Instead of conducting an investigation and registering an FIR against the accused, attempts were made to protect the culprits and the girls were sent home, the Congress MLAs said. They moved an adjournment motion notice seeking a discussion on the issue.

Responding to the allegations, Education Minister Gajendra Yadav said two of the girls, studying in classes 11 and 12, were not hostel inmates and were studying at Swami Atmanand Hindi Medium School in Gangaloor. They were commuting from their homes, he added.

The third, a Class 12 student who had earlier been staying at the porta cabin high school hostel in Gangaloor, had gone home on October 18, 2025, during Diwali vacations and did not return, he said.

After contacting her family, it was found that she had voluntarily left the hostel to stay elsewhere, Yadav said, adding she was not removed from the hostel.

The Congress’ motion seeking discussion on the issue was disallowed by Dharamjeet Singh, who was in the Chair at the time.

The rejection triggered sloganeering from Congress members, who then walked out of the assembly.

LoP Mahant said the minister’s reply on such a serious matter was extremely worrying.

“While the entire House felt the gravity of the issue, the minister appeared insensitive, prompting the opposition to boycott the proceedings,” he said. PTI TKP BNM
