In eye of Red Fort blast probe, a Pulwama doctor with an MBBS from Srinagar

A native of Pulwama, Nabi was allegedly part of the Faridabad-Jammu and Kashmir module of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and the Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH), a J&K-specific wing of al Qaeda.

New Delhi: Dr Umar U. Nabi, the key suspect in the explosion near the Red Fort Metro station, had completed MBBS from Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar in 2017, ThePrint has learnt.

The 36-year-old is believed to have been killed in the high-intensity blast that rocked the Red Fort area on Monday night.

The GMC link, according to the sources aware of the investigation details, was gleaned from Nabi’s medical registration.

He had worked in GMC, Anantnag as well and last worked at Faridabad’s Al-Falah School of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, the sources said. Dr Muzammil Shakeel, another terror suspect, worked in the same Faridabad hospital.

A native of Pulwama, Nabi was allegedly part of the Faridabad-Jammu and Kashmir module of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and the Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH), a J&K-specific wing of al Qaeda.

Hours before the blast, the J&K police, along with its Haryana counterpart, recovered a 2,500 kg cache of IED-making material Monday from the rented premises of Shakeel at Fatehpur Taga village in Haryana’s Faridabad district.

The cache included around 360 kg of highly inflammable material, suspected to be ammonium nitrate, along with chemicals, reagents, other inflammable materials, electronic circuits, batteries, wires, remote controls, timers, and metal sheets.

Before Shakeel, another terror suspect, Dr Adeel Ahmed Rathar, had landed in the police net.

The two doctors were arrested following a manhunt after posters supporting the Jaish-e-Mohammed with threats to security personnel were found in Srinagar.

While Shakeel had been teaching at the Faridabad hospital ever since he moved to the district nearly three-and-a-half years ago, Rathar—the other terror suspect from Kulgam—was posted at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur.

Probe has revealed that this terror module was led by a group of doctors from Kashmir, the sources said, adding that the names of several other doctors have emerged.

“So far 10-12 are accused in the case. Six to seven of them are doctors,” a senior officer in the security setup said.

Nine people were killed while 20 others injured in the blast that took place near the busy Red Fort metro station.
