Chandigarh, Apr 11 (PTI) Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia on Saturday questioned the AAP government’s claim of arresting over 90,000 drug traffickers under its anti-drug drive, ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh, asking how many of those held were actual traffickers and how many were drug users.

“The truth is that many of those arrested are themselves victims of addiction,” claimed the former deputy chief minister.

In a statement, Randhawa urged the government to avoid such “publicity-driven” claims, as they defame Punjab at the national level.

Instead, the government should focus on rehabilitation and treatment of drug victims so they can be reintegrated into mainstream society, he said.

Randhawa also demanded that the government disclose the number of ‘A-category’ traffickers arrested, along with their names, and provide details of narcotics recovered from them.

He said the Congress has consistently fought against drug trafficking and will continue to do so, but will not allow Punjab’s image to be tarnished over the issue.

The Gurdaspur MP urged the government to take action at the ground level, target key traffickers, and dismantle the drug supply chain.

Majithia also took on the government over the issue, accusing it of prioritising optics over outcomes.

“Those truly involved in the drug trade continue to escape, while the system focuses on optics rather than outcomes,” the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader said. PTI CHS RHL
