Jaipur, Apr 13 (PTI) The Rajasthan government moved an application before the Jaipur bench of the High Court seeking deferment of panchayat elections.

In its plea, the state government sought an extension of time to comply with the court’s earlier order directing it to hold the elections by April 15, 2026.

The High Court issued the direction while hearing public interest litigations filed by Sanyam Lodha and Girraj Devanda regarding the delay in local body elections.

In its latest submission, the government filed a detailed application expressing its inability to hold the elections within the court’s deadline.

Urban Development and Housing Minister Jhabar Singh Kharra said that Advocate General Rajendra filed the application before the court today. “We have highlighted two challenges for the government to conduct the election by April 15, as the court ordered earlier and sought an extension,” he said.

According to the minister, the government informed the court that the survey of the OBC commission requires more time.

“The first round of the survey by the OBC Commission revealed some flaws in the survey. Therefore, the commission directed the collectors to survey many places. The second round of the survey and finalising the report will take at least two to three months,” he said.

He also noted that the state election commission’s electoral roll revision process also happened during the special intensive revision process.

“However, after the revision, we have found many names to be included in the SEC list which were dropped from the SIR list. This would be illegal if we allowed those people to vote. Hence, we need to revise our roles further, which is also a time-consuming process,” he stated. PTI CORR SDA MPL MPL
