Kolkata, Mar 16 (PTI) A thundersquall, reaching a top speed of 72 km per hour, passed over Kolkata on Monday evening, accompanied with medium intensity rain, the India Meteorological Department said.
A thundersquall is typically a thunderstorm with a sudden, sharp increase in wind speed.
The IMD said an upper air circulation over Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal, along with strong moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal, will cause thunderstorms over some districts of the state this week.
Trees got uprooted at a few places in Kolkata and other districts owing to the thunderstorms in the evening.
Rain and thunderstorms also occurred in North and South 24 Parganas districts, weather department officials said.
People returning home from work were inconvenienced amid the inclement weather, due to limited access to public transport. PTI AMR RBT
