Chandigarh, Mar 21 (PTI) A delegation of various farmer unions in Punjab on Saturday submitted a memorandum to state BJP unit chief Sunil Jakhar, raising various demands, including a debt waiver for farmers and resolution of the state’s river water issue.
The delegation comprised Bharti Kisan Union leader Harmeet Singh Kadian, BKU Punjab leader Furman Singh Sandhu, Doaba Kisan Committee Punjab leader Jangvir Singh Chauhan, Majha Kisan Sangharsh Committee leader Balwinder Singh Raju Aulakh and other leaders.
In their memorandum, the delegation raised demands including resolution of Punjab’s river water issue based on the riparian principle, making farmers debt-free, Bhavantar scheme for crops, and formation of a farmers’ commission.
Additionally, they demanded priority for Punjabis in jobs in the state, timely payment of sugarcane dues, strict action against drugs, and the introduction of mobile laboratories to check adulterated milk.
The farmer leaders urged the BJP to include these demands in its upcoming election manifesto and to address Punjab’s issues at the earliest.
Jakhar, after listening to the delegation, assured that the genuine demands of farmers would be raised at the party platform and all possible efforts would be made for their resolution. PTI CHS NB NB
