Puducherry, Mar 24 (PTI) Disgruntled supporters of former Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Tuesday held a protest here against Puducherry Congress president V Vaithalingam for “denying ticket (seat)” for the April 9 Assembly polls in the union territory.
According to party sources, Narayanasamy expressed to contest from Nellithope constituency. However, the seat has been allotted to DMK, a major constituent of INDI block.
The DMK has announced V Karthikeyan as the candidate for Nellithope seat.
Vaithalingam, the lone Lok Sabha member from the union territory is contesting the Assembly elections. He filed his nomination on Monday to contest from Thattanchavady, where AINRC leader and Chief Minister N Rangasamy is seeking to retain the constituency.
With the denial of seat to Narayanasamy, his supporters protested in front of Vaithilingam’s house and also at the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee office. They raised slogans against Vaithilingam and police arrived at the site and restored normalcy, sources said.
Narayanasamy contested from Nellithope constituency in a by-election in 2016 after he became the chief minister of the union territory. In the 2021 elections, he did not contest.
The Congress and DMK on Monday reached an accord for the upcoming Assembly polls in the union territory, where the Congress will contest 16 seats. The DMK has been allotted the remaining 14 seats.
The filing of nominations for the elections ended Monday. The scrutiny of nominations will begin from 24 March and the last date for withdrawal of candidates is 26 March.
Single phase polling for 30 seats in the union territory is scheduled on April 9. PTI COR KH
