New Delhi: A group of Indian Statistical Service (ISS) probationers from the 2024 batch met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Jan. 14. They discussed the role of statistics in governance and development, a PIB press release stated.
Murmu emphasized the importance of statistical tools and quantitative techniques in effective governance. She said governments rely on national statistical systems to collect data on health, education, population and employment. This data forms the basis for policymaking and ensures transparency and accountability in governance.
She urged the ISS probationers to develop a deep understanding of statistical methods and use their skills to address the nation’s data and information needs. She encouraged them to be mindful of the needs of the underprivileged while collecting data, emphasizing that every piece of information gathered would ultimately be used to improve people’s lives.
The president also highlighted the growing role of statistical research in monitoring environmental impacts and climate change as India progresses toward inclusive and sustainable development. She said research conducted by ISS officers on indicators such as energy consumption and carbon emissions will be instrumental in developing data-driven strategies for sustainable development and environmental conservation. These strategies will contribute to India’s efforts in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
