New Delhi: The country’s power sector is on track to meet its target of 5,000 MW of additional capacity by 2031-32, with the installed capacity currently at 4,46,190 MW, according to the new report, a PIB press release stated.

The report, published by the Renewable Energy Sector of India, also said the country’s transmission network, with a capacity of 1,95,181 circuit kilometers, is now one of the largest unified grids in the world.

The connecting the whole country into one grid has transformed the country into one unified power market, enabling Distribution Companies to buy power at cheapest available rates from any generator in any corner of the country thereby enabling cheaper electricity tariffs for consumers, the report said.

The new National Merit Order Dispatch scheme, which has been in operation since April 2019, has resulted in lower variable costs on a pan-India basis. The government is also committed to providing 5,000 MW of additional capacity of renewable energy by 2031-32, and the new report said that the country’s power sector is on track to meet its target of 5,000 MW of additional capacity by 2031-32.
