Bhopal, Mar 30 (PTI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday said that only those with a spirit of service can succeed in politics, while “personal ambitions” adversely impact the democratic system.

Yadav was addressing the inaugural session of the two-day conference of young MLAs from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan held in the state assembly here.

Stressing the need for humility, dignity, and discipline in politics, he said, “Public representatives need to be sensitive to people’s problems, be studious, skilled in stress management, and work with complete dedication for the good of the people. A public representative’s behaviour when faced with a problem and his management skills in resolving it reflect his personality.” Legislators should think and work beyond party differences, he said, adding that people entering politics for personal ambitions adversely impact democratic values and the system.

Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar, Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, and Leader of the Opposition Umang Singhar were present on the occasion.

Yadav claimed that the belief that democracy originated in the West is not completely true, as it has been a natural characteristic of the Indian political system.

“Indian systems have always respected differences of opinion; the tradition of debate in political and religious systems has existed since ancient times. Expression of opinions has been respected and valued in all areas in India,” he said.

He noted that it is the result of the values and traditions of democracy historically ingrained in India that even after the departure of the British, democratic systems continued to function smoothly in the country.

Tomar described the participation of youth as crucial in strengthening democracy, which is a comprehensive system based on freedom, justice, equality, and fraternity.

Young legislators act as a bridge between citizens and governance, and their energy, modern thinking, and innovative capabilities can bring positive change to important issues such as education, health, industry, and climate change, he said.

He pointed out that young representatives can also play an important role in raising awareness about social evils such as casteism, drug addiction, and gender discrimination.

Speaking on the occasion, Devnani said that the primary responsibility of public representatives is to establish effective communication between the people and the government.

He said that democracy can be strengthened only when there is increased transparency and participation between the public, the legislature, and the governance processes.

Devnani also emphasised the need to combat corruption and the equitable use of public resources, stating that ensuring transparency and accountability in governance is our collective responsibility.

Madhya Pradesh’s Leader of the Opposition, Umang Singhar, said that leadership doesn’t come from a position, but rather begins in college.

Citing that student union elections have been discontinued in this state, he said that these polls were an important medium for developing leadership skills in the youth.

He further stated that winning elections is not an art, but a heartfelt connection with the public, and that if legislators work honestly, they will not face defeat. PTI BNS MAS ARU
