Mumbai, Apr 11 (PTI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday countered NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar’s remark about regressive elements entering the Warkari sect, claiming that some people with Urban Naxal links had infiltrated the movement but were rejected. The term ‘Warkari’ is used for devotees of Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur who undertake an annual pilgrimage on foot to the temple town. The tradition goes back several centuries and has inspired great Bhakti poets such as Tukaram and Namdev.
In an article published in a magazine, Pawar rued that regressive elements had entered the Warkari tradition in recent times and the discourses of some preachers of the sect encouraged religious fanaticism.
Talking to reporters, Fadnavis said Pawar’s article was completely wrong and showed a lack of understanding of the tradition.
The Warkari sect, with a history of 800 to 900 years, represents a philosophy rooted in brotherhood, spiritual purity and the teachings of the Bhagwat tradition, he said.
“Some people who entered the Warkari movement of late had Urban Naxal links. Fortunately, the movement rejected them,” he said. The government had “dossiers” on such individuals, said Fadnavis, who holds the Home department.
“The Warkari tradition is rich and inclusive. It emphasises purification of the mind and harmony with nature,” he added.
Pawar’s article was “completely incorrect” and he was saddened by its content, but everyone has the right to express their views, the chief minister further said.
“In literary forums, diverse opinions are presented. Pawar saheb’s article may have been included considering his stature as a former chief minister and Union minister. What he should write is his prerogative,” the BJP leader said. PTI MR KRK
