Bareilly (UP), Mar 28 (PTI) Senior Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) leader Pallavi Patel on Saturday said the panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh are being “deliberately” postponed with an eye on the upcoming assembly elections.

Speaking at a party event held in Bareilly, Patel, who is currently a Samajwadi Party MLA, said the delay was adversely affecting the democratic process.

The last panchayat polls in UP were held in four phases in April 2021. The election was held at four levels of panchayat bodies: gram panchayat, gram pradhan, block panchayat and zila panchayat.

Patel also alleged that a lack of coordination among ministers is preventing the administrative machinery from functioning smoothly.

The Sirathu MLA alleged that the government is soon going to shut down 27,000 government schools, a move that will adversely impact the education of the poor, Dalits, and backward classes.

She said while the country is being touted as one of the world’s strongest economies, 80 per cent of people have to stand in long queues for free rations.

The 27 per cent reservation to the Other Backward Classes was also not being implemented in its entirety and power and resources remain monopolised by a select few, Patel said.

She also demanded that the government conduct a caste census expeditiously, so that the actual status of every section of society can be ascertained, and their “rightful share” in power and resources can be determined. PTI COR NAV SKY SKY
