New Delhi, Mar 29 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the “hardworking fishermen” of the country and said they are not just “warriors of the sea” but a strong foundation of a self-reliant India.
During his monthly radio broadcast, ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ Modi emphasised that initiatives such as port development and insurance for fishermen are making their lives significantly easier.
“Our fishermen brothers and sisters are not just warriors of the sea; they are also a strong foundation of a self-reliant India. Battling the waves of the sea even before dawn, they set out to strengthen their families and the country’s economy,” the prime minister said.
Modi acknowledged that weather patterns have a significant impact on the fishing community’s activities at sea. To address this, he stated that they are receiving full support through technological advancements. “I am very pleased that these efforts are not only enhancing our fisheries sector but also encouraging a spirit of innovation,” he said.
Modi noted that innovations are continually taking place in the fields of fisheries and seaweed, and fishermen are becoming increasingly self-reliant.
He cited a few examples, including that of Sujata Bhuyan of Sambalpur, Odisha, who, a few years ago, started fish farming in the Hirakud reservoir and achieved success after difficulties, Havva Gulzar of Minicoy in Lakshadweep, who, after running a fish processing unit, set up a cold storage unit, and Shivling Satappa Huddar of Belagavi, who chose a path different from traditional farming and created a pond farm.
