Sonbhadra (UP), Mar 21 (PTI) A 30-year-old riding a motorcycle was killed and another critically injured after a large chunk of coal from a truck fell on them near a railway crossing in the Shaktinagar area here, police said on Saturday.

Shaktinagar SHO Kamal Nayan Dubey said that the deceased has been identified as Amit Kumar, 30, while the pillion rider, Rahul Singh, 22, sustained severe injuries and is admitted to the hospital.

The incident occurred on Friday night when the two men riding a motorcycle were travelling behind a coal-laden truck. The truck was en route from NCL Khadia towards Dudhichua Railway Station, the SHO said.

He said that when a chunk of coal fell onto the youngsters on the motorcycle, the vehicle lost its balance and overturned, which resulted in the death of the driver, Kumar, while his companion sustained severe injuries.

Outraged by the accident, local residents staged a protest by placing the body on the railway tracks at the crossing, blocking traffic for several hours.

Upon receiving information about the incident, police personnel from the Shaktinagar station arrived at the scene, pacified the irate crowd, cleared the area, and restored the traffic flow.

A case has been registered in this connection and the body has been sent for post-mortem, police said.

According to Village Head Hiralal, the aforementioned route constantly witnesses the movement of overloaded trucks, and chunks of coal, small and large, frequently fall from these vehicles, leading to accidents. PTI COR NAV SHS SHS
