New Delhi, Apr 7 (PTI) The Northeast Frontier Railway zone has developed a set of advanced, in-house technological tools at Kamakhya Coaching Depot in Guwahati to enhance safety, improve maintenance and efficiency, and ensure reliable, high-performance operation of Vande Bharat sleeper coaches.

India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express has been operational between Kamakhya and Howrah since January and, according to the Railway Ministry, its launch ushered in a new era of world-class and comfortable rail travel.

Officials said that since this is the first and only pair of sleeper versions of Vande Bharat, which are in operation, its advanced detections of faults and their timely maintenance is very crucial for smooth and regular service.

“Building on this, Northeast Frontier Railway has introduced advanced, in-house developed maintenance systems using cutting-edge and cost-effective technologies,” said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer.

“NFR’s growing capability in adopting innovative and sustainable practices marks a significant step in modernising maintenance for high-speed and premium train services,” he added.

The first among these systems is the Air Spring Monitoring System, which enables intelligent, condition-based monitoring of coaches.

“The system ensures continuous tracking of critical parameters, early detection of anomalies and precise validation through advanced acoustic imaging techniques. This predictive and data-driven approach enhances operational reliability, strengthens safety standards and ensures a smooth, comfortable and superior travel experience for passengers,” Sharma said.

The second is a Portable Vibration Monitoring System for real-time condition monitoring of rolling stock.

“Currently deployed for Vande Bharat sleeper rakes at Kamakhya depot, the system ensures early identification of potential issues and facilitates timely corrective action, thereby minimising failures and ensuring seamless journey experience,” he added.

The third indigenously designed and implemented solution is an External Pit Power Supply and Pre-cooling System.

The officials said that these systems set new benchmarks in safe and efficient maintenance practices.

“This system enables safe maintenance of Vande Bharat sleeper coaches during OHE (Overhead Electrification) shutdown by supplying power to essential onboard systems. It also eliminates the risk of electrocution for maintenance staff and significantly reduces rake turnaround time, ensuring better availability of high-quality, well-maintained coaches for passengers,” the officials said.

Sharma stated that these initiatives have reaffirmed Northeast Frontier Railway’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology, strengthening safety frameworks and delivering a superior and comfortable travel experience to passengers in line with advanced global benchmarks. PTI JP NB
