‘No violence on campus,’ JNU tells students after clashes over chicken

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University vice-chancellor on Monday warned students to maintain “peace and harmony” in the campus, a day after clashes erupted over non-vegetarian food being served on Ram Navami.

The vice-chancellor, rector and other officials visited Kaveri Hostel Monday where the students had sparred.

“No violence will be tolerated on campus,” Vice Chancellor Shantishree Dhulipudi Pandit told students, according to a university statement. She also asked hostel wardens and security officers to take immediate steps that would avoid confrontation.

“If anyone found indulging in such acts, they will be liable for disciplinary action as per University rules, the statement said.

Six students were injured Sunday in fights that erupted over the University canteen serving non-vegetarian food on Ram Navami.

The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) on Sunday alleged that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members stopped the canteen vendor from supplying chicken and attacked him in the afternoon.
