New Delhi, Mar 18 (PTI) There is “no retirement in public life”, and politicians continue to serve society until their death, AIADMK leader M Thambidurai said in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Participating in the farewell discussion, he congratulated the members who had completed their terms and hoped that some of them would return and continue to serve the nation.

Thambidurai said that while people may talk of one term or three terms, in reality, leaders remain committed to public service and would continue serving ’till their death. Politicians won’t leave their seats, he said.

“Retirement is the end of life. Up to that, everybody must have the opportunity to serve the society, for the country,” he remarked, adding that politics is not merely a profession but a lifelong commitment.

Taking a jibe at this, CPI (M) member John Brittas, who immediately spoke after him, said: “As Thambidurai said, there are a few people who never retire. But from the Left, we retire. That is how we have decided.” Later, he also commented on DMK leader Tiruchi Siva, who described the retirement as not the end of the road but only the bend of the road, expressing hope that retiring members would continue contributing to public life.

“I will never get a chance to bid farewell to Tiruchi Siva ji but he will get a chance to bid farewell to me and I will soon give you a chance also,” said Brittas.

Both Thambidurai and Tiruchi Siva are renominated for another term for Rajya Sabha by their respective parties. PTI KRH KRH MR
