Thiruvananthapuram [Kerala]: Kerala minister Veena George on Tuesday said that 24 bodies have been retrieved following a series of massive landslides that struck the hilly areas in Meppadi in the state’s Wayanad in the early hours of July 30.
“We are trying every possible thing to rescue our people. We have received 24 bodies in different hospitals. Around 70 people are also injured. We have ensured proper treatment of the injured,” Geroge told reporters here today.

She said that teams of NDRF and Civil Defence are present in Wayanad and a team of Navy will also be reaching there soon.

“A bridge in the area has also washed away,” the minister said.

The landslide has affected Meppadi, Mundakkal Town and Chooralmala areas and the state health minister said that the government has rushed rescue personnel, medical equipment and health workers to Vythiri, Mananthawadi, Kalpetta and Meppadi government hospitals.

“Another disastrous rail accident! Howrah- Mumbai mail derails in Chakradharpur division in Jharkhand today early morning, multiple deaths and a huge number of injuries are the tragic consequences,” the West Bengal Chief Minister posted on X.

“I seriously ask: is this governance? This series of nightmares almost every week, this unending procession of deaths and injuries on railway tracks: for how long shall we tolerate this? Will there be no end to the callousness of Government of India?!” Mamata Banerjee said.

“My heart goes out to the bereaved families, condolences to the next of kin,” she said.
Train Manager South Eastern Railways, Md. Rehan said that the mishap took place as a Goods Train had already derailed in the downline and Howrah-CSMT Express was moving at 120 kmph.

“Around 3.39 am, the train got derailed and many people got injured in the incident…The incident happened as a Goods Train had already derailed in the downline and Howrah-CSMT Express was moving at 120 kmph. The upline is affected,” he said.

The accident took place around 3:45 am, after which Accident Relief Medical Equipment (ARME), with staff and Additional Divisional Railway Managers CKP (Chakradharpur Railway Station), reached on-site to manage the situation.

“Train No. 12810 Howara-CSMT Express has derailed near Chakradharpur, between Rajkharswan West Outer and Barabamboo in Chakradharpur division. ARME with staff and ADRM CKP on site,” Indian Railways stated.

According to the PRO Chakradharpur division, six passengers sustained injuries, and out of those five, sustained minor injuries and one was admitted to the hospital.

According to the Indian Railways, all the injured have been given first aid by the railway medical team.

Relief and rescue operations are currently underway at the site of the train accident near Chakradharpur.
