Bhopal: An inquiry has been initiated in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh into claims that a man hired as a cardiologist at a missionary hospital in the district impersonated a British doctor and conducted surgeries that allegedly led to the deaths of at least seven people. The man allegedly impersonating the British doctor is suspected to be Narendra Vikramaditya Yadav, who identified himself as London-based Dr N. John Kem on social media.
The matter came to light after Deepak Tiwari, a lawyer who is also in-charge of the district child welfare committee, submitted a written application to Superintendent of Police Shrut Kirti Somavanshi requesting an investigation into the credentials of Dr N. John Kem following complaints from local residents. After the matter was raised, the man who identified himself as Dr Kem was summoned by the police for questioning.
According to senior police officials from Damoh, based on the complaints received, the investigation was initially handed over to the district medical officer. However, based on the officer’s recommendation and other discrepancies that came to light, it was decided that a panel be constituted at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur, to verify the man’s credentials and investigate the matter.
Officials from the district administration said no FIR has been registered so far, since the verification of the man’s credentials is still ongoing. Further action will be taken based on the findings. Moreover, the complaint received was not filed by any of the affected families, leaving the police with only a written application submitted by the child welfare committee.
Priyank Kanoongo, chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, along with his team, is expected to visit Damoh on 7 April to further investigate the matter.
Damoh District Collector S.K. Kochar told ThePrint, “The investigation is underway and only after the investigation is complete will we be able to comment on the matter.”
Speaking to the media, Deepak Tiwari, CWC district in-charge, said, “A man named Narendra Yadav identified himself as a specialist in cardiology department and conducted at least 15 surgeries leading to the death of all these patients. This man has also been booked in Hyderabad on kidnapping charges and never stays for more than a month in one place.”
