Kohima, Mar 19 (PTI) The BJP on Thursday officially handed over the party ticket to Daochier I Imchen for the forthcoming by-election to the Koridang Assembly constituency in Nagaland.

The ticket was formally handed over by Nagaland BJP president Benjamin Yepthomi during a function held at the BJP Mokokchung district unit office in the presence of state party officials, PDA alliance partners, party karyakartas and well-wishers.

Daochier I Imchen is the consensus candidate of the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), comprising the Naga People’s Front (NPF), previously Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party, and is also supported by other political parties.

The by-election has been necessitated following the demise of five-time sitting MLA, Imkong L Imchen, who passed away on November 11 in a hospital in Guwahati at the age of 75.

Daochier I Imchen, the youngest son of the late leader, has been fielded by the alliance, marking a direct political succession in the constituency.

Koridang was held by Imkong L Imchen as a BJP candidate. In the 2023 Assembly elections, the NDPP and BJP contested under a seat-sharing formula of 40:20, with Koridang falling under the BJP’s quota.

Talking to PTI, Daochier I Imchen, while expressing happiness on being the consensus candidate of the PDA, said he would file his nomination by Friday, while the last date for filing nominations is March 23.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on March 24, and the last date for withdrawal is March 26.

Polling, if required, will be conducted on April 9, with counting of votes scheduled on May 4.
