Rewa (MP), Apr 8 (PTI) Heavy vehicles have been banned from using a bridge over the Bihad river in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district until April 30 after a crack appeared on it, disrupting a key route to neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday.

Police have diverted heavy vehicles bound for Prayagraj and Varanasi through the Maihar-Satna-Chitrakoot route after the bridge closure about two days ago, an official said.

The overpass, located about 5 km from the district headquarters, was built around two decades ago, the official said, requesting anonymity.

Repairs are underway, he said, adding that Collector Pratibha Pal was the right person to share more information about it, given her role in coordinating with the Public Works Department and the National Highways Authority of India.

The collector could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

Meanwhile, the sudden traffic surge caused a nearly a kilometre-long jam on National Highway-30 in Maihar late Tuesday night.

Police teams have deployed along the highway to manage traffic and prevent congestion, said officials, adding that signs indicating route diversions have been installed at multiple locations for the benefit of motorists. PTI LAL NR
