Rampur (HP), Mar 11(PTI) A mountaineer achieved a rare feat by scaling the 17,000-foot Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash peak in the month of March, when weather conditions are considered hostile for the trek.

Bal Krishan Thakur (38) from Nirmand in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh said he began his trek on March 8 to reach the summit of what is one among five separate peaks that are collectively called the Panch Kailash.

The trekking route to Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash, considered among the toughest treks in the country, is usually open for a 15-25 day period in July-August and is suspended the rest of the year.

In March, the weather is very unpredictable and stormy, marked with blizzards and landslides on the treacherous route for the pilgrimage. Melting snow near Bhim Dwari makes the route more dangerous.

The Shrikhand Mahadev Kailash yatra is often suspended even during the summer due to inclement weather conditions.

Bal Kishan urged young people to pursue adventure sports not only as a hobby but also as a means of employment. He said that this field holds immense potential for youth and can even help them stay away from drug addiction.

Locals expressed pride over Bal Krishan’s feat and said there are a large number of talented youth in the area who could bring laurels if the government promoted mountaineering, other adventure sports and provided facilities. PTI COR BPL SKY SKY
