The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) paid tribute to the 27 women seafarers who have made significant contributions to the maritime industry and also honoured them on the occasion of International Women in Maritime Day, a PIB press release stated.
The women were from various marine institutes who are pursuing different degrees in maritime studies and some professionals from the field. The purpose of celebrating Women in Maritime Day is to promote gender equality and break down the barriers in the maritime industry.
This year’s theme is ‘Safe Horizons: Women in Shaping the Future of Maritime Safety’. The theme emphasizes the importance of women in ensuring safe operations and protecting lives at sea. It also highlights the critical role of women in the growth and development of the maritime industry. The number of seafarers has increased by 140% in the last nine years. In 2014, the total number of active Indian seafarers was 117,090, which increased to 280,000 in 2023.
The Directorate General of Shipping had registered 1,699 women seafarers in 2014, which has increased to 10,440 in 2023. This reflects an increase of 514% in the registered women Indian seafarers. At present, the total number of women seafarers/indos registered as on 15 May, 2024 is 13371, while the active women seafarers till 31 December, 2023 is 4770.
