New Delhi: The daring robbery of a Delhi jewellery showroom was meticulously planned, Delhi Police sources said Tuesday, adding that the thieves had disabled the closed-circuit camera inside the shop before carrying out the heist of over Rs 20 crores.

The lack of CCTV footage from inside the Jangpura showroom Umrao Singh Jewellery has emerged as a major roadblock in the probe, forcing cops to glean as much as they can from cameras outside the shop.

Probe teams are now scanning footage from Jangpura’s Bhogal locality to zero in on the culprits.

The massive burglary came to light Tuesday morning when the owner walked into the shop and found equipment broken and a huge hole in the wall of the strongroom which had the valuables. The thieves also took the jewellery kept on display in the showroom.

The loot took place some time between Sunday evening and Monday night, the police said.

“The thieves cut off the CCTV footage before entering to rob the jewellery and the cash,” a senior police officer privy to the investigation said.

The accused were well aware of the showroom’s architecture, an officer said, and knew exactly where to go. They had also done a proper recce of the area and the store, he added.

The ‘meticulous’ entry and getaway

Sources said the execution of the burglary was strategic and meticulous. The thieves jumped on the terrace of the showroom from an adjacent building, they said, and came down to the strongroom on the ground floor. Cops suspect there were at least three robbers.

“They drilled a hole on the strongroom’s wall and entered it one by one to access the jewellery,” an officer said. He also did not rule out the possibility of it being an inside job.

A first information report (FIR) has been registered at the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station. No arrests have been made so far.
