Shillong, Mar 27 (PTI) The Meghalaya government on Friday signed an MoU with the Centre to strengthen implementation of rural drinking water supply across the state, officials said.

The agreement was signed between the state government and the National Jal Jeevan Mission under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, they said.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who attended the event virtually, said the MoU reaffirms the state’s commitment to ensuring safe drinking water for every household.

Highlighting progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission, Sangma said over 83 per cent of rural households in the state have already been provided with functional tap water connections.

“With over 83 per cent rural households already connected, we will continue working closely with the Government of India to ensure timely support and successful completion of this mission,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to the Centre for its continued support in strengthening water supply infrastructure in the state.

The agreement lays down a framework for coordination between the Centre and the state for effective implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, including planning, financing, monitoring, water quality surveillance and sustainability of water sources, an official release said.

The initiative is expected to accelerate progress towards achieving the goal of ‘Har Ghar Jal’ and improve the quality of life in rural areas of the state, it said. PTI JOP RBT
