Shillong, Apr 6 (PTI) The body of a woman, who had been missing since last month, was found stuffed in a sack and dumped in a stream near Nongrah here on Monday, police said.
The body was discovered by locals, who alerted police.
East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said the deceased is believed to be the woman who had been reported missing since March 20.
The victim was a resident of Shillong and originally hailed from Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district, he said.
Family members later arrived at the scene and assisted in identifying the body, police said.
The body has been shifted to NEIGRIHMS for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, a neighbour told police that he had heard someone dumping a “heavy object” near his house late at night last week, but did not pay attention, assuming it to be garbage.
Police suspect foul play and are treating the case as a murder.
“A suspect has been identified. Necessary action will be taken to arrest all those involved,” Syiem said, adding that further investigation is underway. PTI JOP MNB
