New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, during which both leaders discussed the law and order situation in the state.

In the meeting held at Parliament House complex at around 11.30 am, Shah asked the chief minister to accelerate the present peace process and consolidate the growing bonhomie among different communities, a statement from the Manipur government said.

Reviewing the prevailing security scenario in Manipur with the chief minister, Shah agreed in principle to the raising of one Mahila India Reserve Battalion (IRB) for the state and asked Singh to send the proposal, it said.

Manipur has been in the grip of ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities that started in May 2023 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribes status.

At least 260 people, including members of both the Kuki and Meitei communities as well as security personnel, were killed in the violence, while thousands became homeless.

Restive Manipur was put under the President’s rule in February last year which ended with Singh taking oath as the chief minister on February 4 this year. PTI ABS RT
