Palghar, Mar 26 (PTI) Services on Western Railway’s network between Virar and Vaitarna in Palghar district were affected for almost two hours on Thursday after a man was run over by a long-distance train, an official said.
The incident took place at 3pm when train number 22919 was passing on the Down Main line on its way to Surat, he added.
The official told PTI it is a suspected suicide or trespassing (railway terminology for people crossing tracks) case, adding the deceased is yet to be identified.
“The body got entangled in the locomotive and could not be removed immediately. As per railway safety protocol, a train cannot proceed till the body is extricated. It took approximately 1 hour and 42 minutes to remove the body,” he said.
Efforts to clear the tracks were made by the Railway Protection Force (RPF), railway police, staff and personnel from local fire brigade, he added.
“The tracks were cleared at 4:42pm and the train resumed its journey towards Surat. Due to the incident, at least seven mail/express trains and two suburban services were delayed on the route. Further investigation into the incident is underway,” he said. PTI COR BNM
