Mumbai, Mar 11 (PTI) A 38-year-old man, who was apparently upset over the removal of a statue of Lord Vishwakarma in his hometown, has been booked after he tried to immolate himself in south Mumbai on Wednesday, police said.

The incident took place at Usha Mehta Chowk in the Nariman Point area, they said.

According to an official from the Marine Drive police station, one Dadaso Baban Kalsait, a resident of Takli in Solapur district, arrived at the spot and began pouring the flammable liquid on his body.

He was restrained by others and taken to the police station, the official said.

Police said Kalsait was upset after a statue of Lord Vishwakarma, which had been illegally installed on land belonging to the Lohar Samaj at his place, was removed by the local body a few days ago.

An offence under Section 226 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against Kalsait, the official added. ZA PTI NR
