New Delhi: On the occasion of International Literacy Day celebrations held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi Monday, Vice-President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar called upon everyone to resolve today to make at least one person literate. He emphasized that when we make someone literate, we liberate them, help them discover themselves, and make them feel dignified. This act reduces dependence and generates independence and interdependence, enabling individuals to help themselves.

This year’s theme, ‘Promoting Literacy through Multilingualism’, at the UNESCO partnered celebrations for literacy day in New Delhi underscores the critical role of multilingualism in improving literacy levels across India’s diverse communities.

The Vice President of India emphasised the importance of literacy in a speech. He said, “When we make someone literate, we liberate him or her, we help that person discover himself or herself, we make him or her feel dignity, we cut down dependence, we generate independence and interdependence”. He also highlighted the need for everyone to work together to promote literacy. “It is time for us to be in mission mode with commitment and passion to ensure 100% literacy at the earliest,” he added.

The government has launched a DTH Channel, ‘ULLAS DTH Channel’, to promote multilingual literacy, for communities to learn about the importance of multilingualism and how to use multilingual approaches in promoting literacy. The celebrations of International Literacy Day provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of literacy and to promote its spread as it served as a reminder of the role of multilingualism in enhancing accessibility and inclusivity of education.
