Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar-led NCP’s X handle suspended over ‘copycat’ claims

Pawar broke away from the parent NCP in July, to become deputy chief minister in the ruling BJP-Sena. His faction's handle was very similar to the original party's.

New Delhi: Microblogging site X has suspended the handle of one of Maharashtra’s ruling parties – the Ajit Pawar-led faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – for violating rules.

The site did not go into the exact details behind disabling the account, @ncpspeaks1, which was created after the group broke away from the parent NCP, led by Ajit Pawar’s uncle and party founder Sharad Pawar.

Incidentally, the original NCP handle, now used by the Senior Pawar group, is @ncpspeaks. The new-yet-similar handle was started soon after Ajit Pawar split from his uncle party and joined Maharashtra’s BJP-Sena government. Ajit Pawar is now the state’s deputy chief minister.

The Ajit Pawar group spokesperson, Sandeep Kamble, said Wednesday that X had received “some complaints” about the handle, prompting it to suspend the account.

Kamble said they have officially written to X, and would also complain against those who said their handle was a duplicate.

It is reported the parent party may have been behind the complaints, though the group spokesperson Clyde Crasto denied this.

Meanwhile, the Ajit Pawar faction will use the handle @MahaNCPSpeaks till their old one is restored.
