Mumbai, Mar 17 (PTI) The Maharashtra legislative assembly was adjourned for the day on Tuesday due to the lack of quorum, prompting the Opposition to accuse the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of giving priority to party matters over public issues.

Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar raised an objection after it was found that the House did not have the required number of members during proceedings.

A debate initiated by the Opposition was scheduled for discussion, but several BJP MLAs and ministers were absent due to a party meeting.

Wadettiwar said the absence of ministers and officials for an important discussion raised serious questions about accountability. Officials were not present in the House despite directions from the Speaker and the Chief Minister, he added.

While Opposition MLAs protested vociferously, the presiding officer adjourned the House twice for 10 minutes. As the quorum was still not met, the proceedings were adjourned for the rest of the day.

The ruling coalition of the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP has more than 230 MLAs in the 288-member assembly. PTI MR KRK
